![]() ![]() ![]() Unless you are madly in love with Mario series and/or not used to RPGs. Those are some of its flaws, the game is still good by any measure, but for someone who played RPGs all his life, this one is more of a 6-7 than a 9-10. Dodging/Blocking the enemies wasn't as intuitive and fun as other games of that genre. I played some Mario & Luigi games before this one and they make this game feel outdated. The battles are pretty much the same through all the game and don't feel like you get much more powerful as the game goes on. Backtracking is only fun if the things you do on the way are fun or makes you feel like you are progressing, and that's not the case. The backtracking makes the adventure feel like a slog and its really bad in this game, as the chapters go on you really feel like it just artificially lengthens the game to the detriment of the quality. While it's not a bad game, it does not have a good story, I just completed it and already can't say what the story was about other than saving the kidnapped princess. Unfortunately, this game is part of this 2% for me. The thing that the games in the 2% have in common is that they have great presentation, great first half and come from reputable game developers. I've played and completed more than 150 RPGs on consoles and I'd say that 98% of the time, I'd agree with any of those RPG aggregated review score. I'm sure I'll recall the game fondly and maybe bump it up to an 8 down the line, but as of now it stands behind the original Paper Mario and Super Paper Mario for me. Some of them are worth completing just for the self-contained side stories, but a fair number of them are just basic fetch quests.Īll of this is just to say why I don't think I can call the game "great." The characters are delightful, the world is vibrant and animated, the chapters are uniquely structured, and the overarching plot turned out to be deeper and darker than I expected, but even though all these elements alone are memorable and high quality, it's the connective tissue that sometimes flagged for me. You can only accept one Trouble at a time, so even if there are multiple in the same location, you have to return all the way to the hub to accept it before you can start it. Especially the side quests (called "Troubles" in the game). Whether you're mashing through a dialogue of a Pianta telling his wife he loves her 100 times, jumping on an NPC a dozen times to wake him up, or chasing that same NPC all over the world map, these moments of the game are stretched to the absolute limit of my patience. This is a really, really good game with deep combat mechanics and an excellent script, but the only thing holding it back in my eyes is the pacing.
